Some rules and facts about typography

If you try to design your own poster, flyer, advert or anything else you want to publish bare in mind that sometimes LESS IS MORE.

    Here some hints:

Avoid to use more than 2 different font types

Make sure that the font types combine well together

Don’t squeeze or stretch the letters! Why not? Because the author of the font type made a good effort to make the letters look good in their proportions. Don’t violate these esthetical rules and use them as they are. Squeezing and crushing normally leads to worse readability. If the size of your chosen font type is too small or too big to fit in your space just look for another one instead of streching or squezing it. You can find a lot of free fonts on dafont.com, well organised and with preview of the word that you want to display.

Look at the space between characters. Some professional applications like InDesign are giving you options to adjust the space (which is necessary for not outing you as a bungler). Normally you always have to adjust the space between characters like A and V. Here’s a useful link to understand what I’m talking about: KERNING RULES

Another terrible error which I have seen many times is to use cursive script fonts in capital letters. E.g. DON’T DO THIS  because it looks a lot better like this. Don’t you think so? These fonts are made for use with upper and lower case letters. Here you find some interesting informations about how to choose the right font.
